Lieutenant Colonel Md. Rokonujaman Khan, PhD, AEC is a military officer, academic administrator, researcher, and environmental science professional currently serving as the Chairman of the Department of Environmental Science (ES) under the Faculty of Science & Technology (FST), Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP). BUP’s official records list him as the current Chairman of the department.

Dr. Khan earned his PhD from Jahangirnagar University. His academic and research activities focus substantially on environmental science, nanotechnology, environmental pollution, and related interdisciplinary areas.

His research publications include studies on the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using plant extracts and investigations of their cytotoxic and antibacterial properties. He has also contributed to research examining the broader bioactivity, toxicity, and environmental applications of green-synthesized silver nanoparticles. More recently, he co-authored research investigating microplastic contamination in store-bought and cooked rice in Bangladesh, demonstrating his involvement in research addressing emerging environmental and public-health concerns.

As Chairman, Dr. Khan provides academic and administrative leadership to BUP’s Department of Environmental Science. Established in 2017, the department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs and emphasizes interdisciplinary education, field-based learning, environmental research, sustainability, and solutions to contemporary environmental challenges.

His continuing research activities also include work on PM2.5-bound trace-metal concentrations in ambient air and their natural remediation in university environments. BUP’s research project list for 2025–26 identifies him as the principal researcher of a project addressing this area, highlighting his engagement with practical issues related to urban air pollution and environmental remediation.

In addition to his departmental and research responsibilities, Dr. Khan contributes to BUP’s scholarly publication activities. He serves as an Associate Editor of the Journal of the Faculty of Science and Technology (Journal of FST), published by Bangladesh University of Professionals.
